The university has been developing and expanding since its inception, which started with the enrolment of 57 science based students. Now, USM offers courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels to approximately 20,000 students. USM has also become a well-known university at the local and international level.
Established as the second university in the country in 1969, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) was first known as Universiti Pulau Pinang. In 1971, USM moved from its temporary premises at the Malayan Teachers’ Training College, Bukit Gelugor to the present 416.6 hectare site at Minden, approximately 9.7 km from Georgetown.
Universiti Sains Malaysia ranked #142 in the QS World University Rankings 2021. Recently, QS also published rankings for 2022 wherein the university ranked #147 with an overall score of 51. The university has been in the top 200 universities in the world since 2020.
