As made apparent by episodes 5 and 6 of Season 4 that aired tonight (titled "Elevator Part 2" and "Elevator Part 3" just to make sure I make a numerical mistake somewhere in my writing), Louie's ditched the satire for a more genuine "slice of life" feel. Telling a long-form story which, from the looks of the titles for next Monday's episodes, still has more to go.
Last week's encounter with Evanka (Ellen Burstyn) and Amia (Eszter Balint) planted the seeds for this story, along with the issues both Louie and Janet were having with young Jane. Issues that continued this week when Jane, fed up with her school and holding bizarre contempt for all her classmates and teachers, pulled down her teacher's skirt in front of the other kids. So again, like last week's Part 1, not a lot of actual "comedy" going on here in this tale. In its place is the wonderful, agonizing awkwardness of being a parent and having to try and figure out what's going on with your child when they act out. The answer, of course, is that Jane is currently messed up because of everything. Divorce, the city, being the youngest, having two parents who communicate with her on totally different wavelengths. The works. And I appreciate the hell out the fact that there's really no fix for this.
The best part of the episode, for me, was Louie's conversation with Janet regarding Jane, where (showing how different the two of them are) Louie got super emotional and Janet remained detached and somewhat elitist. Because, yes, it was weirdly selfish and status-oriented for her to say "I'm not going to let my kids be losers." Keep in mind that that remark had nothing to do with Jane's actual academics (she's actually a bit of a violin prodigy - as seen in Part 3) nor did it address the fact that private schools aren't some magic cure-all for behavioral issues. In fact, Janet just seemed to be using Jane's recent behavior to push a totally different agenda on Louie. And Louie being Louie was unable to articulate an appropriate counter-argument. Ellen Burstyn as Evanka on Louie.And so in keeping with the pattern that anxiety somehow makes Louie make bold decisions regarding his happiness, Louie immediately asked Amia out on a date. Of course, the two of them not speaking the same language made everything extra adorable - while probably also creating safer situation for Louie. The moment where she spent a few minutes - including a disarming pantomime of getting completely undressed to take a fake shower - trying to act out "hair dryer" for Louie was pretty great.
"Elevator Part 2" continued on with Louie's split-levels of life enjoyment. Both in the way the luminous Amia unburdened him of all forms of commitment (even communication) and how he had to deal with Jane's precocious misbehavior.
