Makunouchi Ippo is an ordinary high school student in Japan. Since he spends most of his time away from school helping his mother run the family business, he doesn't get to enjoy his younger years like most teenagers. Always a target for bullying at school, Ippo's life is one of hardship.
The story in Hajime no Ippo is about the eponymous title character Ippo Makunouchi. A very shy, always helpful and friendly high school student. However, he is also very naive and so it happens that he all too often becomes the victim of bullying a few of his classmates.
Throughout his childhood, Makunouchi Ippo has always been picked on by his fellow classmates. Long hours helping his mother run their family business, a fishing boat store, has left him without the time to make friends, and so he remains an introverted loner, doomed to be beaten day in and day out.
Summary: Makunouchi Ippo is a 16-year-old high school student who helps his mother run the family business. His hefty workload impedes on his social life, making him an easy target for bullies.
