The Mandarin, also known by his real name as Trevor Slattery, is the main, later tertiary antagonist of Iron Man 3. His identity as the Mandarin was created by Killian and was used as a puppet to hide Killian from being suspected by the US Government.
During three of their early confrontations, the Mandarin manages to take Iron Man (or his alter ego Tony Stark) captive, but fails to kill him. Similarly, Iron Man thwarts the Mandarin's various schemes, but is unable to bring him to justice.
The reveal of Trevor Slattery in Iron Man 3, after only his terrorist Mandarin persona had been marketed, was met with mixed responses, as many fans of the comics opposed the changes made to the original character.

The Mandarin is a character appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. He is the leader of the Ten Rings, and the father of Shang-Chi.
