Nathan Birnbaum - Wikipedia. Nathan Birnbaum ( Hebrew: נתן בירנבוים; pseudonyms: "Mathias Acher", "Dr. N. Birner", "Mathias Palme", "Anton Skart", "Theodor Schwarz", and "Pantarhei"; 16 May 1864 – 2 April 1937) was an Austrian writer and journalist, Jewish thinker and nationalist.
Nathan Birnbaum was born in Vienna and lived there from 1864 to 1908 and from 1914 to 1921. In 1882, together with two other students at the University of Vienna, he founded “Kadimah,” the first organization of Jewish nationalist students in the West.
Nathan Birnbaum was fortunate enough to die in 1937, peacefully, in the Netherlands, before the Holocaust. Had he died a few years later at the hands of the Nazis, as his close contemporary Simon Dubnow did, his fate would no doubt have seemed to those who remembered him to represent history’s verdict on his ideas.

Despite a distinguished life and a remarkable written and intellectual legacy, history has not been kind to Nathan Birnbaum.1 While alive, he was acknowl edged not only as one of the founders of central European Zionism but also as a major figure in Jewish politics and thought.
