After Jack is hit by a bus during a global blackout, he sings "Yesterday" for his friends, and discovers they have never heard of the Beatles. After realizing the world no longer remembers the band (google has no record of the Beatles), Jack begins performing their songs, passing them off as his own.

The Beatles had zero input creatively, outside of approving of their music being used in the film. Director Danny Boyle stated in interviews that the film was "blessed" by Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, as well as the estates of John Lennon and George Harrison.

As far as films released in 2019 go, it is neither one of the best or worst in a hit and miss year and somewhere around solid middle if having to rank. 'Yesterday' is a slick looking film, not exemplary but never cheap. Lily James looks great and the camera clearly loves her.
