  1. Dec 25, 2018 · 1. Well, “to” (as in “toward”) is sometimes represented as the rightward-pointing arrow (→), so if you used the leftward-pointing arrow (←) to represent “from”, people might understand that. The broader answer is that you can make up whatever symbols you want, but that leads to the broader question: will people understand it ...

  2. Sep 15, 2017 · The only use I've seen for the ¬ symbol is to represent negation in the context of formal logic. For instance, if P is the proposition "It will rain today", then ¬P is the proposition "It will not rain today." I've also seen ~ used for this. Also note the first comment in the linked post: That character is U+00AC NOT SIGN and is one of the ...

This (a unit of measurement) seems to be the original, intended usage of this little funny guy, but at some point it got some new uses. –

  9. Aug 31, 2016 · The Wikipedia entry notes that Russel and Whitehead used the symbol in their Principia Mathematica of 1910. As several commenters have noted, various systems of formal logic employ alternative symbols, including "+" and "∥", to represent this non-exclusive sense of "or".

  10. Sep 4, 2023 · The section symbol § when handwritten is sometimes drawn as an S with a circle around the middle. One of my mathematics professors similarly denoted a chapter as a C but with the circle on the middle of the C on the left side. I like it and use it myself in notes.
