Canarsie Pier, an old restored fishing pier, constitutes one of many parts of the otherwise wonderful Gateway National Recreation Area, run by the National Parks Service. lf you come on a day with pleasant weather, the views are pretty, including to the east, where you see John F. A Brief History of Canarsie. Named for the Canarsie people who once lived on the surrounding lands, this neighborhood of Brooklyn has undergone drastic transformations through time. The now-densely packed residential area was once a sparsely-populated farming and fishing village that saw growth soar only after the end of World War II.
Canarsie Pier has been a fishing hotspot for more than 300 years. Not only is this a great spot to catch blue fish and fluke, but has a picnic area, playground, and kayak launch.
