I'm quite sure the original phrase is "close to the vest," not chest (and God knows where the hell "nest" comes from), and comes from gambling (most likely poker), as a couple of people have suggested here. I think "bien cacher son jeu," as pieanne suggests, is a good and idiomatic translation or equivalent.
