Life expectancy at birth for both males (74.1) and females (78.5) was lowest in the most deprived areas of New Zealand in the 2017–2019 period. The highest life expectancies were in the least deprived areas (84.7 and 87.5 years for males and females respectively).

Life expectancy at birth was 83.2 years for females and 79.5 years for males, based on death rates in 2012–14. The gap between male and female life expectancy at birth has narrowed.
