Yol (pronounced; translated as The Way, The Road or The Path) is a 1982 Turkish film directed by Şerif Gören and Yılmaz Güney. The screenplay was written by Güney, and directed by his assistant Gören, as Güney was in prison at the time.

Yol is a profoundly political film which metaphorically hypothesises that the destiny of Turkey is one which is fundamentally restrained by its tragic history. It narratively involves five prisoners who are permitted a week's parole to travel home and pulsates with noticeable anger while it glides effortlessly into a universal allegory.

"Yol" is amazing for many reasons. I have heard some amazing Hollywood back stories of how films like "MASH" and "Apocalypse Now" were hellish shoots. But, none of them matches what the filmmakers did on this project. "Yol" was secretly filmed, and the entire cast, which included box office icon Tarik Akan risked being blacklisted.
In order to make the folk hero and filmmaker Yılmaz Güney, who had fled Turkey, known in the West and to give him a new start as an artist in exile, YOL had to be predsented in Cannes in 1982. Under great time pressure we cut out Süleyman’s and half of Yusuf’s story.

YOL is the rare film whose production may have been more dramatic than its story. Written while Kurdish director Yılmaz Güney was imprisoned by Turkey’s military junta, YOL was ultimately finished after Güney escaped prison and went into exile.
