John Winthrop the Younger FRS (February 12, 1606 – April 6, 1676) was an English politician and scientist. An early governor of the Connecticut Colony, he played a large role in the unification of the colony's settlements into a singular colony and obtaining a royal charter for the colony.
Winthrop's eldest son John Winthrop the Younger. Winthrop documented his religious life, keeping a journal beginning 1605 in which he described his religious experiences and feelings.

His parents were wealthy, and in 1622, at age 16, he was sent to Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, for a general education.
