Aug 31, 2022 · Darko blew everyone away, and when the same director makes another movie they expect to be just as blown away, but the scale has shifted. Darko is no longer "mind blowing", it's now just normal, so making a solid movie on the same level is somehow now a failure. It's pretty stupid really. Same.

If Richard Kelly had kept working on weird mid-low budget indie flicks for like a decade, honing his skill as a director and his reputation as a producer (something he seems to have a knack for but also needs more experience), and all the time retooling and refining Southland Tales, it could've been a magnum opus.

I always assumed this was his attempt at making something more traditional after the box office failure of Southland Tales but it's just as bizarre and indefinable. It's incredibly messy and lofty, occasionally to its detriment but there's something so honest about it.
Mar 7, 2022 · KELLY I'm just trying to protect the intellectual property, from anything happening to it. Like what happened with that sequel that I have never seen, and will never ever see. At first Richard Kelly was not even meant to direct Donnie Darko, since it was his first film.
Kelly followed his cult hit with a bigger movie, but even weirder, more esoteric and more artistically interesting. Blomkamp has gotten to direct three absolutely shit films since Elysium, including last year’s Gran Turismo. Kelly hasn’t been able to make a single movie since 2009, the same year District 9 came out.
Jul 10, 2021 · Richard Kelly is a weird case because I feel like the better he got at making movies, the less people liked him. He gets an extreme amount of praise for this first film, mainly I think because people connected to the lead character as portrayed by Jake Gyllenhaal.
