Nielsen: Symphonies Nos. 5 and 6 New York Philharmonic, Alan Gilbert Gilbert leads his New York players in a faithful, virtuosic rendering of all Nielsen's volatile sings between dead-pan facetious and deadly serious.
All three concertos are well played by soloists and orchestra then, with Gilbert continuing to show that he is one of the foremost interpreters of Nielsen's music on the scene. I should mention that Gilbert's SACDs are coupled thusly: Symphonies 3 & 2 (disc 1); #4 & 1 (disc 2); #5 & 6 (disc 3); and the concertos (disc 4).

Gilbert’s Powerful Nielsen Cycle Continues. These are strong, exciting performances of symphonies that demand the sort of bold muscularity in their execution that these artists offer. In Alan Gilbert’s hands the First Symphony sounds extremely confident and wholly mature.
