Jan 27, 2012 · It is with great sadness that we receive the news that Sigma's founder and CEO Michihiro Yamaki has died of liver cancer at the age of 78. Yamaki founded Sigma in 1961 and was still head of the company when it celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2011.
Michihiro Yamaki originally founded the company in 1961 to save a group of cooperating companies that found themselves in peril following the bankruptcy of their supplier, and I believe that no one would have imagined at the time that the company would still exist 60 years later.

He died of liver cancer in Tokyo, Japan, on Jan. 18. In his 78 years, Mr. Yamaki made several significant contributions to the photo imaging industry.
At that time, SIGMA’s founder Michihiro Yamaki, the eldest son in his family, took on a part-time job at an optics maker to support the family while he studied at a university. He excelled and became regarded as a highly skilled engineer of binoculars.
If you’re a photographer, Michihiro Yamaki definitely had an influence on your photography. 2011 was the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Sigma, which began with Yamaki’s invention of the first rear-attached lens converter, a bit of gear we all take for granted now.
