    • Herman Melville’s Arrowhead. Author Herman Melville’s (1819-1891) most productive years were spent at this house in the south of Pittsfield. During his time at Arrowhead from 1850 to 1863, Melville finished Moby-Dick (1851), and wrote Pierre (1852) and The Confidence-Man (1857), before selling up to his brother and moving with his family to New York City.
    • Hancock Shaker Village. On 750 acres in the southwest of Pittsfield is a preserved Shaker commune that was active from the late 18th century to 1960.     • Berkshire Museum. Looking like a Roman villa on South Street, the Berkshire Museum was founded by the newspaperman Zenas Crane, opening in 1903. In the style of museums from that time, this attraction is a multifaceted cabinet of curiosity, zipping from fine art to engineering, natural history, zoology and ancient civilization.
    • Downtown Pittsfield (Upstreet Cultural District) Mostly along the broad boulevards, North Street and South Street, Downtown Pittsfield has a real sense of scale for a city of 44,000.
