   • Herman Melville’s Arrowhead. Author Herman Melville’s (1819-1891) most productive years were spent at this house in the south of Pittsfield. During his time at Arrowhead from 1850 to 1863, Melville finished Moby-Dick (1851), and wrote Pierre (1852) and The Confidence-Man (1857), before selling up to his brother and moving with his family to New York City.
   • Hancock Shaker Village. On 750 acres in the southwest of Pittsfield is a preserved Shaker commune that was active from the late 18th century to 1960.
