  1. Mar 29, 2016 · I have compiled a list of old-school bakeries and confectioneries in Singapore, which you can revisit to bring back some sweet flavours and memories of the past. Simply because I grew up with them and I remembered how all these colourful variety of cakes and pastries indulged me in simple joys.

    • Guan Hoe Soon. Peranakan cuisine has always been a Singaporean favourite and Guan Hoe Soon is renowned as a trailblazer for this fusion style of cooking.
    • Hua Yu Wee Seafood Restaurant. Hua Yu Wee Seafood Restaurant is 70 years old in 2022 and definitely looks the part. Forget the flashy facades you’ll find on most young upstarts, this place is simply an old bungalow with a huge patio that was awarded landmark status on the Bedok Heritage Trail in 2016.
    • Samy’s Curry Restaurant. Founded in the early 1960s, Samy’s Curry Restaurant is still run by the original founder’s family. Originally at Tank Rd, they moved to their current location in Dempsey in the ’70s and have been at that location for over 5 decades now.
    • Fatty Weng. Fatty Weng has its roots in a roadside stall on Albert Street set up by the man who named it for the nickname he had earned from his customers.
    • Teck Leong Lee Kee. Image credit: Shawn. Founded in 1968. Teck Leong Lee Kee is a treasure trove of old-school snacks and candy, tucked away in Ang Mo Kio Industrial Park.
    • Kean Ann Co. Private Limited. Another old-school snacks wholesaler to check out is Kean Ann Co. Private Limited, located in Bedok North, that’s been plying the trade for 61 years now.
    • SnacKING Retro Biscuits. With four locations in Northpoint City, Jurong Point, City Square Mall, and Yishun Mall, getting your fill of old-school snacks at SnacKING Retro Biscuits couldn’t be easier.

    • Houten Chilli Tapioca Chips. Here’s one for all the kids who could take spice – the Houten Chilli Tapioca Chips. This chewy snack provides a yummy balance between sweet and spicy, perfect as a midday snack.

    • Bakery Cuisine. Alas, the waffle place everyone’s talking about—Bakery Cuisine, and more specifically, the Raffles Place branch. This highly raved about contender is frequented by CBD employees who revel in the guilty pleasure of indulging in a thicc waffle during their lunch break.
    • Queensway Lau Tan Tutu Kueh. Sometimes, you can tell a waffle is good just by how it looks. That’s the case with Queensway Lau Tan Tutu Kueh, a household name that has its roots in the 1940s.
    • Levure Naturelle. When I first sought out waffle recommendations from my friends, Levure Naturelle surfaced multiple times. This underrated bakery is a not-so-secret favourite of those who reside in the area who swear by their fat and chunky waffles.
