In regard to the use of difference and different, difference is the right word to use in both of these cases. Examples of the words difference and different: We are different. There is a clear difference between you and him.

I think the point is that "nice return" on it's own doesn't sound right, we need to refer to the trip or journey. Loob said: I'd say either "I hope you had a good trip back" or "I hope you had a good journey back". "Good" is good. Y.
