International. Located in the stunning countryside of Northern England, Barnard Castle School (or ‘Barney’, as we are affectionately known) welcomes students from all over the world, with more than 20 nationalities currently represented throughout our School.
Built around 1890 as a family home, the Victorian villa first opened as a school – Barnard Castle School for Girls and Preparatory School for Boys – in 1905, led by Miss Mosey. In 1913 the governors of the County School explore the idea of opening a preparatory department for boys aged 8-11.
School Life. Barney is a busy and vibrant school, offering numerous opportunities to our pupils. Education is not just about what we do in the classroom, it is also about developing the character. Our extra-curricular programme enables pupils to try a huge array of activities they wouldn’t otherwise have access to.

At Barney, we are able to offer extended before and after school care for our Prep and Senior School day pupils. The following charges apply and attendance must be booked 24 hours in advance by completing the booking form in the link below. Extended Day Charges (per day): Prep. Senior.
