Giotto's Campanile (/ ˌkæmpəˈniːli, - leɪ /, also US: / ˌkɑːm -/, Italian: [kampaˈniːle]) is a free-standing campanile (bell tower) that is part of the complex of buildings that make up Florence Cathedral on the Piazza del Duomo in Florence, Italy.
The majestic bell tower of the Cathedral – also known as “Giotto’s Bell Tower” - is a masterpiece of the Italian Gothic. It has a square base of about 15 meters (49.2 feet) on each side, with corner reinforcing continuing all the way to the cantilevered horizontal crown, at 84.7 meters (278 feet) above ground.
The Campanile is a splendid example of Florentine Gothic architecture from the 1300’s. It was started in 1334 when Giotto, one of the principle artists and architects of the time, began to build the bell tower for the church, placing it next to the church.
