In this episode we got to see Horatio Sanz vs. Chris Farley, Christian Bale vs. Adam West, and Jamie Foxx vs. Redd Foxx, and we were also promised that somebody was going to get punk'd. Unfortunately this episode was much like last week's episode, as it was funny but not at the level that the show once was. On a positive note, however, "When Animals Attack" features one of my favorite gags from Deathmatch yet.

The first match of the show features Horatio Sanz fighting the time-warped Chris Farley. Upon stepping out of the time machine, the thousand pound Farley consumes a bunch of food, and then enters the ring. While the two fighters are introduced, Farley has a heart attack and dies again. Not able to be resuscitated, Mills Lane dumps him back in the time machine, and uses it to get another Chris Farley from the past. Much like the last Farley, this one dies of a heart attack as well. When all is said and done Chris dies six times before he is able to make it into the ring again for the bout. Upon entering the final time, Chris Farley immediately grabs Sanz's tongue and tears it and most of his internal organs out of his mouth - effectively winning the match. Although there wasn't much to the match, and my original reaction being that it was very lame that they killed him before the match - the re-resurrecting of Farley multiple times was actually hilarious. In fact one time he even arrives dead and just falls out of the machine - very funny. I should mention that it is tough to make jokes about somebody's death, but in an environment like Deathmatch, it didn't seem offensive at all.

The second match of the program was the battle of the Batman's as Christian Bale faced off against Adam West. Before the match, there was an interview with Tally Wong and Adam West. As it was the theme of the night - Tally interviewed Adam West under the unchanging impression that West had been brought back from the dead. This was a very funny segment as West pleaded that he wasn't dead yet, only to get angry after being totally ignored. The match was short and a little on the dry side, but it was the bits with Adam West that made the match. At one point West tries to confuse Bale with the Bat-tootsy and the Bat-twist, only to be met with a stool to the head. From here Adam gets angry and lays a beating on Bale, which ends with West throwing Bale into the rafters, which collapses with his weight, and falls on him. Adam West came out of this thing better than Bale in every respect. West was never really made fun of, but rather respected for his campy portrayal of Batman, while they had Christian come off as a sulking pretty-boy. The match wasn't great, but I did like the use of the old Batman exclamations when Bale was hitting West.

I can only guess what CDM could have been if done with a larger budget. What I found most disappointing was the loss of the claymation feel and the sense of personality of each celebrity--in other words, the elements that make the TV show so memorable. This might have been bearable if combat was interesting and if you couldn't whip through the enti...
