Feb 17, 2023 · While Dear Edward is a fictional novel, Napolitano drew inspiration from a real-life plane crash from 2010. On May 12, 2010, Afriqiyah Airways Flight 771 crashed, resulting in the deaths of 103 passengers and crew, but 9-year-old Ruben Van Assouw survived.
