Episode Discussion: S03E08 - The End of History [Deutschland 89] While it was not as good as 83, it was still the best thing on tv this year. I did feel it was missing the magic of 83. I was really perplexed at the lack of pop music, which was very important at setting the tone of 83 and 86.
Deutschland 83 is a 2015 German spy thriller television series starring Jonas Nay as a 24-year-old native of East Germany who is sent to West Germany in 1983 as an undercover spy for the HVA, the foreign intelligence agency of the Stasi.
But long story short, I think the strength of German TV is exploring German history, so that's why Season 2 was so weak imo, it felt very cliched and disposable, it didn't speak from the heart of the experiences that Germans went through in the 80s. The 89 season had some great early moments, and some almost surreal character arcs, but the ending was a cop-out, a bail-out, and a gratuitous slap at the whole southern border issue in the U.S. Near as I can tell, the writers must have thrown that stuff in simply because... they could.
