Manual. 1st and 2nd generation Mazda 3's with manuals are far superior in performance to the automatics. And from what I can tell the 3rd gen 6-speed automatic is equal to the 6-speed manual transmission in acceleration. Nothing like the performance difference between the newer Ford Mustang with 6-speed manual vs 10-speed automatic.
With the turbo power falls off stupid fast so winding it out just becomes noise. Under sudden hard acceleration you'll get about a quarter second of lag every once an while. Steering is sharp and you can actually feel like you are connected to the car. It handles well in both rain and Gravel/ dirt side access roads.

Check out this teardown of this Mazda engine, it has failed (,which is super rare to happen) but he goes in depth with the build quality and what they engineered into it to make it last.
Aug 20, 2021 · The cx-5 drives very well. The 30 might be better since it’s smaller and handles better. CX-30 is exactly halfway between the 3 and the CX-5. Take a look at CX-30. If you want something closer to the 3 then look for a CX-3 or CX-30. From my experience though, I have a CX-5 at home and it drives incredibly nice.

I searched high and low for the part at junkyards and found nothing. Mazda dealerships will charge you $1500-$2000 and that part is always on back order.
