I am a fellow user with decades of experience using Microsoft Word. I have written extensively on using Word and have help articles on the Microsoft site. It is not done to compel purchase of the paid version. However, generally, any Word document has a good chance of looking different when opened on a different device.
I hope these are not Sharepoint documents. A quick repair should reset the association right. Press Windows key, hold it and press r to open Run window. Type appwiz.cpl and press enter. This will open Uninstall or change a program window. Click Office in the list of program. Click Change at top.
