Learn to read the Chinese characters on the pieces.

The book I learned from is Chinese Chess: An Introduction to China's Ancient Game of Strategy by H. T. Lau. The book is mostly examples and exercises.

When one looks at Chinese chess in comparison to international chess, one cannot help but notice how extremely limited several of the pieces are: Kings are confined to 9 positions overall (the palace) and have 4 possible moves at most (only 1 step orthogonally).

In Chinese Chess, however, the kings cannot leave the palace and the if the opposition is blocked by a piece the other King has more leeway in movement.

But overall the game is less popular outside China.
