Jun 24, 2016 · $\begingroup$ The pipe symbol "|" and the quotient symbol "/" are completely different things. That's the source of your confusion. "a|b" is shorthand for "a divides evenly into b with no remainder" whereas "a/b" is the result you get when you divide b into a.

The symbol $\divideontimes$ ( \divideontimes ) can be used when the group structure is multiplicative , such as the group of positive-real numbers with multiplication, $(\mathbb{R}_{>0}, \cdot)$.
Feb 25, 2015 · You can use a keyboard shortcut to make a ÷. Copy the devision sign from Kappy's answer. Go to settings> general> keyboard> shortcuts> tap the plus sign> paste the division sign on the top line, ds on the bottom lne.
On 22 August 2019, 69.128.108.106 added the ⊙ notation as acceptable as well, and on 25 October 2023,Limelike Curves removed the ∘ notation from the definition. This usage difference is the source of the complaints about how PE(MD)(AS) is applied. When "÷" is used, PE(MD)(AS) works exactly as it is taught in school. No parenthesis necessary. The "÷" is just a simple binary division operator, accepting only the terms to the immediate left and right of the symbol. On the other hand "/" is a bit different.
