Here is a help article about status indicators. When you are online you will typically see a green dot, when offline it will be a greyed dot, and you also have the ability to mark your status as away. I'm not aware of any other message status except for when the are read or unread. Hope this helps.

See the small white dot on the screen's top, left row. Every app has a small icon that can be placed up there when you have a notification . It looks like your top row can show 4 of them in that space. When you hit 5+ notifications the dot is placed there to let you know that you have more notifications than the space allows.
