Matsumoto Castle (松本城, Matsumoto-jō), originally known as Fukashi Castle, is one of Japan's premier historic castles, along with Himeji and Kumamoto. It was the seat of Matsumoto Domain under the Edo Period Tokugawa shogunate. It is located in the city of Matsumoto, in Nagano Prefecture.

Aug 1, 2024 · Matsumoto Castle, located in Nagano, is famous for being the oldest surviving 5-tiered 6-story castle tower in Japan.* While there are castles with towers all over Japan, only 12 are genuine relics from the Sengoku and Edo periods, while only five are designated ‘national treasures.’
With over 400 years of history, Matsumoto Castle is 1 of only 5 castles designated a “National Treasure” of Japan. The other 4 include Himeji , Hikone , Inuyama and Matsue Castles. The original construction dates from 1593 to 1594.
Matsumoto Castle is open year-round except between December 29 and 31. On average, visitors spend between 45 and 60 minutes inside the castle. During Golden Week (April 29–May 5) and the Obon holiday (mid-August), the castle can become very crowded.
"The Crow" - a gorgeous black castle with many original elements, in a beautiful park near the center of Matsumoto, itself a gem on the center of Japan. Well worth a trip to the city. I especially liked the "secret floor". For me, Matsumoto-jo is right up there with Himeji-jo, except fewer crowds... that's always good!
