The Australian Government usually funds most of the spending for medical services and subsidised medicines. It also funds most of the $5.5 billion spent on health research in Australia in 2016–17.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on 30 January 2020 and a worldwide pandemic on 11 March 2020. On 5 May 2023, the WHO Director-General announced that WHO no longer considered COVID-19 to be a PHEIC.
