Mr Seah Kian Peng was first elected Speaker of the Parliament of Singapore by Members of Parliament (MPs) on 2 August 2023, making him the 11th Speaker of Singapore since the First Legislative Assembly of 1955.
One of Parliament's main functions is to make laws for the country. Before a law is passed, it is first introduced in Parliament as a draft called a "Bill". Bills are usually introduced by a Minister on behalf of the Government. However, any Member of the House can introduce a Bill known as a Private Member's Bill.
Members of Parliament (MPs) consist of elected, non-constituency and nominated Members. The majority of MPs are elected into Parliament at a General Election on a first-past-the-post basis and represent either Single Member Constituencies (SMCs) or Group Representation Constituencies (GRCs).
Sitting of Parliament. The Parliament of Singapore can meet at any time of the year. The date of the meeting or sitting can be specifically named by Parliament upon its adjournment or, if no date is fixed, called by the Speaker.
