If J.J Abrams has proved one thing with his 2009 reboot of Star Trek, it's that he has a knack for making even the most convoluted fictional lore accessible. He introduced himself to the world as the go-to guy for unravelling dense narratives and identifying their core beats, those moments that sing out universally even if they're grounded in the most ridiculous of sci-fi scenarios. He made newcomers happy. For the most part, he kept fans happy. It's no wonder he was tapped for Star Wars.

With Star Trek: Into Darkness, Abrams doesn't quite repeat this trick - although to call it a trick is doing him somewhat of a disservice - but does manage to solidify Star Trek as one of our most palatable blockbuster franchises moving forward. While it may not be the most sophisticated of sci-fi spectacles you'll see this year, Into Darkness will certainly be one of the most fun.

Minor plot details ahead. After a breathless opening sequence that begins in the bright crimson flora and fauna of an alien planet and ends in a volcano, the film's narrative spine is quickly established, and you need not look too far from the first film to grasp it. Kirk's renegade ways - reaffirmed by a token alien-babes-in-bed sequence - are no less rampant. Spock is no less torn between his emotional and logical self. Starfleet still can't shape them into a perfect crew. The eternal struggle continues.

The twist to the tale is John Harrison's (Benedict Cumberbatch) arrival on Earth, which sets in motion a series of events beginning with an apparent terrorist attack on a futuristic London and ending, unsurprisingly, in deep space, with all the bombastic, high-stakes space opera theatrics one would expect from Abrams in-between. There are battles between colleagues. There are battles between spacecrafts. There are battles between friends. It's a new, high-octane Trek, and boy, it is running on all cylinders.

Into Darkness proves that J.J.'s original reboot was no fluke. But let's hope that the next movie can build a bit further upon its simplistic foundations.
