Telok Ayer Church ranks as the oldest among Methodist Chinese speaking churches. Deep in the heart of the old Chinese settlement, the church was the base from which the Methodist pioneer missionary, Dr. Benjamin West, reached out to the migrated Chinese.

He was ordained in 1932 and became the Senior Pastor of Telok Ayer Chinese Methodist Church where he remained as the Senior Pastor for about 30 years. During his service, he was Superintendent for the South District and the President of the Singapore Overseas Chinese Christian Association.
