May 7, 2022 · It is a one-way street. Once you remove S mode, you'd need to reinstall Windows completely to get it back. S mode was geared toward people who don't need to use software not in the Microsoft store. Turning off S mode doesn't have a downside if you need to use that software. Apps like Defender will continue to run just fine.
Looking at Programs & Features in my Windows 10 installation, I see "Microsoft Windows Desktop Runtime - 3.1.17 (x64)" listed. Supposedly, it's a Microsoft program, installed on 13 Jul 2021 (5 days ago), 201 MB in size, version 3.1.17.30215, with links at the bottom of Programs & Features to https://dot.net.core.
