You probably liked Absolutely Anything better when it was called Bruce Almighty. The film combines the comedic talents of Simon Pegg, Robin Williams and the Monty Python team, but in telling a tale that’s incredibly similar to the 2003 movie in which Jim Carrey was granted God-like powers, it invites comparisons that aren’t flattering.

The central conceit is exactly the same, though here rather than the actual God making a man god-like, it’s a group of malevolent aliens doing the bestowing.

Calling themselves the ‘Intergalactic Council of Superior Beings’ and voiced by Pythons John Cleese, Michael Palin, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam and the film’s co-writer and director Terry Jones, the aliens have decided to terminate Earth, but before their ‘Destruction Order’ can be carried out, they must enact due legal process.

They do this by choosing an earthling at random, giving them supreme power, and if said person proves their worth, leaving the planet be.

Terry Jones could have done absolutely anything with this high-concept set-up but chose to go down the romantic comedy route. Which would be fine if the jokes were better, but they aren't. The result is a loosely knitted together series of vignettes, some of which raise titters, but the majority of which elicit groans.
