Rock Island Arsenal was one of the US Ordnance facilities that rebuilt 1911/1911A1 pistols as well as many other functions. The "FK" marking is for Frank Krack, Chief of inspection at RIA.

    May 9, 2012 · My favorite 1911 is a Colt original series 70 GCNM. My first Colt was a stainless steel series 80 government model. I've owned 5 Colt 1911's and all of them were very reliable weapons. The series 70 GCNM has been the most accurate pistol I've owned. I have never owned a Kimber 1911 but a couple of freinds do and they like them.

  7. Sep 3, 2010 · The Colt Officers Model (OACP) was the predecessor to the Defender. It has a 3.5" barrel instead of a 3" barrel. Another difference is that the Officers Model is a bushing'ed gun with a recoil plug while the Defender is bushingless. The OACP is no longer is production. The OACP developed a stigma regarding its recoil spring plug.

Colt tempered the top of the magazine to give the fed lips some spring, and then blued the magazine. It was found that the heat blueing process was removing some of the temper, so the tempering process was moved to after the magazines were blued.

It was a basic Series 80 pistol with less frills than a standard Colt Government Model to enable it to sell at a lower price point, and better compete with the Springfield Armory and Norinco pistols that were starting to take away Colt's market share.
