In total, some 170,000 to 250,000 people were murdered at Sobibor, making it the fourth-deadliest Nazi camp after Auschwitz, Treblinka, and Belzec. The camp ceased operation after a prisoner revolt which took place on 14 October 1943. The plan for the revolt involved two phases.
Oct 2, 2020 · 1940-44: The Germans invaded the Netherlands in May 1940. For three years Erna and Jacob survived in hiding. On April 17, 1943, they were sent to the Westerbork transit camp in the Netherlands and deported seven days later to the Sobibor killing center in Poland. Jacob was gassed at Sobibor in 1943.

Sep 4, 2020 · On October 14, 1943, prisoners in Sobibor killed 11 members of the camp's SS staff, including the camp’s deputy commandant Johann Niemann. While close to 300 prisoners escaped, breaking through the barbed wire and risking their lives in the minefield surrounding the camp, only about 50 would survive the war. Photo.

Jan 5, 2024 · In early May 1942, the first mass transports from the Puławy, Krasnystaw, Chełm and Zamość counties, and a month later from the town of Hrubieszów, began reaching Sobibór. The victims were brought in to the camp in cargo trains (about 70 to 100 people were crammed into each wagon). See. czerwiec 1942.
May 17, 2021 · During the first week of October 1942, the camp authorities resume mass murder operations in the gas chambers of Sobibor. Between October 8 and October 20, more than 24,000 Slovak Jews are brought there from the transit camp-ghetto Izbica.
