Shortly after, a Klaxosaur attacks, disrupting Hiro's graduation ceremony and leaving Zero Two's partner killed in action. So Zero Two, left without a partner, lets Hiro ride with her and Hiro becomes Zero Two's "darling," although later in the series, he would become her partner.
