Directed by Ron Howard, the film is about a Japanese car company that decides to buy up a shuttered American car factory in a town where it was the major source of employment. There is friction because of the numerous cultural/work culture differences between the Japanese management and the American workers.
Though the automobile manufacturer in the film is a Japanese corporation, "Gung Ho" is an Americanized Chinese expression. "Gung" translates as "Work" or "To Work", and "Ho" means "Together" or "Harmony", reflecting the film's Eastern teamwork ethic portrayed in the film's storyline.
"Gung Ho" poorly dramatizes the influence Carlson -- renamed Thorwald in this film -- had on the battalion and depicts the botched raid as a unparalled success. The film itself suffers from a weak screenplay, uninspired directing, terrible editing, poor sound design, and continuity errors.
