"In the shadow" refers to a specific shadow. I'd expect a sentence with "shadow" to connect the shadow to the object that casts it, as in the following: Outside the house was a huge old tree.

On the one hand, the meaning is pretty obvious (and a literal meaning is possible here). On the other hand, why would an "old sin" be worse, somewhat, than a "new sin".
