Surly Squirrel is a fictional character created by Peter Lepeniotis and the main protagonist of The Nut Job franchise. He first appeared in the 2005 animated short film Surly Squirrel and the 2011 short film Nuts and Robbers.

Appearance
Surly is a purple squirrel and has brown eyes. He have cream fur for his chest, marks around his Neck and has a black nose. When he was young, he had a pink nose.
Personality
In the first film, he was self-absorbed, coarse, cynical, selfish, bossy, cocky, inconsiderate and ambitious because of his checkered past but at the end, he realizes that he cares about his friends very much and turns over a new leaf to protect them. In the second film, he is friendly, naïve, big-hearted, heroic, sweet, innocent, nice and selfless, but he still is a bit cocky when necessary. Surly gives the intro about how he and the park are the smallest in the food chain, and then tells that the nut shop was closed by Lana, giving the park a new place to get food from for all of their lives.
