Under the North Star (Finnish: Täällä Pohjantähden alla) is a trilogy published between 1959 and 1962 by Väinö Linna, Finnish author and former soldier who fought in the Continuation War (1941–44).
Väinö Linna, a leading postwar writer, became known for his war novel Tuntematon soltilas (1954; The Unknown Soldier) and for the trilogy Täällä Pohjantähden alla (1959–62; Under the North Star).
Väinö Linna was born in 1920 in Urjala in central Finland. His father worked in a slaughter-house and died when Linna was only eight. Linna worked as a farmhand and lumberjack before working in a textile mill. In 1940 he was called up to the military and served as the leader of a machine gun company in the war against the Soviet Union.
