Oct 21, 2023 · Yep you're right. In the end, I am happy that Wendee is back to voice Yoruichi. But this is a shitty situation for both Wendee and Anairis. The one who should ultimately be blamed here is whoever tried to recast the character in the first place. Be it someone at VIZ or casting director at Studiopolis.
Oct 22, 2023 · Answer: The Bleach anime has returned to animate the final manga arc after being cancelled in 2012. In the original anime Wendee Lee dubbed an important character named Yoruichi. Yoruichi returned for the first time since 2012 in the dubbed anime last week with a new voice actress, Anairis Quinones. The reason for the recasting was not stated.
In the Bleach anime, Yoruichi has always been dubbed by Wendee Lee, a legacy VA with lots of notable titles under her belt (Haruhi, Lucky Star, Cowboy Bebop etc). Oct 23, 2023 · There’s screenshots in the linked tweet but to summarize, Yoruichi from Bleach was originally voiced by Wendee Lee, but in the recent season she was seemingly set to be recast with Anairis Quiñones in the role, but apparently Viz Media changed their minds for some reason and changed it back to Wendee.
I think a better way to frame it is that diversity wasn’t the reason Anairis Quinones was hired, but was likely the reason why Wendee Lee initially wasn’t. A problem with the phrase “diversity hire” is that it feels like it removes any notion that Quinones is talented, but even if Studiopolis had an all-black shortlist, she still came out on top.
