Fairbanks North Star Borough comprises the Fairbanks, AK, Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is one of only two metropolitan areas in Alaska. The borough is home to the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Fort Wainwright and Eielson Air Force Base.
Fairbanks is the largest city in the Interior region of Alaska and the second largest in the state. The 2020 Census put the population of the city proper at 32,515 [7] and the population of the Fairbanks North Star Borough at 95,655, [7] making it the second most populous metropolitan area in Alaska after Anchorage.
The Fairbanks North Star Borough is called home by just under 100,000 residents. Known as the 'Golden Heart City', Fairbanks boasts our very own world-class University of Alaska Fairbanks, as well as Fort Wainwright Army Base.
The Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB), a local government unit similar to a county, covers 7,361 square miles and has 99,200 residents. Within the Borough are two cities, Fairbanks and North Pole and several unincorporated communities.
