Gjirokastër ( Albanian: [ɟiɾoˈkast:əɾ, -ra], Albanian definite form: Gjirokastra) is a city in southern Albania and the seat of Gjirokastër County and Gjirokastër Municipality. It is located in a valley between the Gjerë mountains and the Drino, at 300 metres above sea level.
- Start your morning with a view from the Gjirokaster Obelisk. Rising above the rooftops of the Old Bazaar like a wisp of white smoke, the Gjirokaster Obelisk is not a war memorial, but rather a monument to education and the Albanian language.
- Explore Gjirokaster Castle (Kalaja e Gjirokastrës) Sitting atop the highest hillock like a white stone coronet, the fortress is Gjirokaster’s crowning jewel.
- Visit the Gjirokaster Museum. Whatever you do, don’t skip the Gjirokaster Museum inside the castle, where information about the city’s rich history is presented alongside biographies of some of modern-day Gjirokaster’s residents.
- Wander through the charming Gjirokaster Bazaar. Gjirokaster Old Town is a sprawling Ottoman-style Bazaar, originally constructed in the 17th century and completely rebuilt 200 years later following a devastating fire.
- Visit the Gjirokaster Bazaar (Old Town) One of the best things to do in Gjirokaster is to roam around the city’s bazaar. Located in the Old Town, this district of zig-zagging streets has been the center of commerce ever since the Ottoman era.
- Manalat Quarter. The Manalat Quarter in Gjirokaster has some of the most beautiful houses on its winding streets. This historic neighborhood is higher within the valley, making it a quieter and less touristy area than the Old Town.
- Gjirokaster Castle and Museum. Atop a hill, just around the corner of the Bazaar, is where you find the tall Gjirokaster Castle, overlooking the entire city and valley.
- Bazaar Mosque. Apart from the Gjirokaster Bazaar, you can find several other sights within the Old Town, including the Old Bazaar Mosque. This 17th-century mosque is the only remaining one of the 13 that were built during the Ottoman era.
- Admire the houses. The first thing that hit me was the houses. I’ve seen medieval fairy tale houses around Europe before (in France, Bosnia, and Denmark), but none like these.
- Gjirokaster Castle. Entrance fee: 200 lek (€1.60) – an additional 200 lek to enter the museums. The next place to visit in Gjirokaster is the castle. Mainly because it’s the best vantage point of the town and the entire valley.
- The US Air Force jet. Next to one of the castle towers, there’s also a recovered US Air Force jet that was shot down during the communist era. The pilot was believed to be a spy but was later sent home, safe and sound.
- The Cold War Tunnel. In the castle, you’ll find old tanks, cannons, and more artillery from bygone war times. Another attraction inside – or rather below – the castle is The Cold War Tunnel; a giant tunnel bunker used for transportation during the Cold War.
