The museum was founded in 1857 under Bennet Woodcroft from the collection of the Royal Society of Arts and surplus items from the Great Exhibition as part of the South Kensington Museum, together with what is now the Victoria and Albert Museum.

The Science Museum is the most visited science and technology museum in Europe. There are over 15,000 objects on display, including world-famous objects such as the Soyuz TMA-19M descent module - the spacecraft that took astronaut Tim Peake back to Earth from the International Space Station - and a real piece of the Moon.
