  4. Jun 1, 2016 · This mission was in its early stages when one of their direction finding (DF) operators, SP4 James T. Davis, was killed in a Viet Cong ambush on a road outside Saigon. The date of the ambush, 22 December 1961, made Davis the first American soldier to lose his life during the Vietnam War.

  5. Air Force and Marine firemen fought the blaze for three hours. All forward crewmembers perished. The lost crewmen included pilot MAJ Gene W. Brown, co-pilot CAPT James T. Davis, navigators CAPT Anthony K. Johnson, CAPT William H. Pritchard, and CAPT Donald J. Reynolds.
