Pushkin's A Journey to Arzrum (Erzurum) celebrates his friends’ part in delivering for Russia and salutes the Russia they stood for. The literary challenge was steep. Its text had to pass muster with an infuriated Tsar Nicholas, his “personal censor”.
The book follows Pushkin's journey to Tiflis with a company of dragoons. Though Pushkin is not unsympathetic to the different peoples he witnesses on his journey, some of the commentary in his book has been regarded as Orientalist in its presumption of Russian superiority over the peoples being colonized.
