The Threepenny Opera (Die Dreigroschenoper [diː dʁaɪˈɡʁɔʃn̩ˌʔoːpɐ]) is a German "play with music" by Bertolt Brecht, adapted from a translation by Elisabeth Hauptmann of John Gay's 18th-century English ballad opera, The Beggar's Opera, and four ballads by François Villon, with music by Kurt Weill.
His musical collaborator was Kurt Weill (1900-1950) who had been an opera coach, theatre music director, and student of Busoni. Their first joint effort was “The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny,” produced in 1927. Then in 1928 came “The Three-Penny Opera,” which made a success all over Germany.
