Madame du Barry, by Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun; posthumous, between 1789 and 1805. Vigée Le Brun began working on the portrait in 1789, but had to abandon it when she underwent exile the same year, due to the French Revolution.
In 1771 Madame du Barry finally triumphed over her old enemy the Duke, who was sent away by Louis XV. Upon the king's death in May 1774, his successor Louis XVI banished her from Versailles and sent her to the Pont-aux-Dames convent in Meaux.
